Night Sky Action This Week!

Like shooting stars? Watch the sky tonight and tomorrow night for the annual Perseid Meteor Shower! NASA considers it one of the BEST of the year!

So what is the Perseid Meteor Shower? It’s an annual event that gets its name from the constellation Perseus, with most of the meteors seen on these nights from the Perseid stream. They’re fast too…traveling at almost 60KM per second to the earth’s atmosphere! The speed at which they travel at creates a trail, and it’s that trail, not the actual meteoroid that we see in the sky.

Some tips for seeing these ‘shooting stars’…clear, moonless, dark sky is the best; luckily, we’ve got lots wide open spaces in the Annapolis Valley!  No need to look straight up either, as most meteors are seen at lower elevations.

Grab a front row seat on your lawn (turn off the porch light), in a field, where ever you have a nice clear view of the sky, and enjoy the show. The best part…it’s absolutely free!
