January’s Full Moon is the Wolf Moon!

Star gazers…our first full moon of 2021 is next Thursday (January 28th), and January’s full moon is known as the ‘Wolf Moon’.  Named that way, as you may have guessed, after the howling wolves! Because wolves often hunt at night, their howling has become associated with nightfall and the moon. In some cultures, the January full moon was known as Old Moon, Ice Moon, Snow Moon, and the Moon after Yule.

Naming the various moons is a tradition that dates back thousands of years! People across Europe, as well as Native American tribes named the months after features they associated with the seasons, and today, those ancient month names are used as full moon names.

As long as the sky is clear, the moon; though technically not full until January 28th, can appear full the day before or after, so you may have a few nights to enjoy it.
