Energy Boosting Foods…AND Ones That Drain It!

Need a little pick me up? Certain foods can give you a boost of energy. You just have to make the right choices!

 

Energy-boosting Foods:

Bananas:
A great way to quickly get a boost of energy from their natural sugar, fructose, which is a carbohydrate.

Eggs:
A powerhouse of protein and nutrients that help with energy metabolism and slow sugar absorption in the bloodstream when paired with carbs.

Black beans: 
Not only versatile, they are an excellent source of plant-based protein, gut-healthy fiber and energy-boosting carbs. And iron.

Pistachios:
The trio of protein, fiber and fat helps keep you fuller for longer and provides sustained energy.

Water: 
One of the biggest signs of dehydration is fatigue. Keeping yourself well-hydrated can quickly turn fatigue into a boost of energy.

 

Now…for the foods that drain you. You may not like the list, I don’t like the 1st item that I start out every morning with!

 

Energy-draining Foods:

 

Caffeine/Energy Drinks:
Not only can they lead to a caffeine crash about 5 hours after consumption, if you consume them later in the day, they can keep you from getting a good night’s sleep and leave you tired the next day.

Candy:
Sugary candy provides a momentary burst of energy, but then causes an energy zap.

Steak: 
After eating steak, your body has to go into overdrive digesting and metabolizing the extra protein. Your energy will be drained and you’ll likely feel sluggish and overly full.

Fruit smoothies: 
Without the right balance of ingredients, your blood sugar levels will spike and you’ll feel hungry, and experience an energy slump shortly afterward.

Low-calorie frozen meals:
In addition to usually not providing enough calories for a full meal their high amounts of sodium lead to water retention, bloating and fatigue.
